Football Rice Krispie Treats

Rice Krispie Treats are an American staple! They are personally one of my absolute favorite treats! Today I am sharing my Football Rice Krispie Treats.  I am putting a small twist on an old classic by using the cocoa krispies versus the regular ones. The cocoa krispies give a fabulous chocolate flavor and also lend their fabulous brown color which is perfect for the football treats I was wanting to make! I added some laces and details with some store bought vanilla frosting and these treats are sure to score a touchdown with your fans!

Warning:  This post is filled with cheesy football related comparisons and puns.  I apologize in advance, I just can’t seem to help myself!

Football Rice Krispie Gameday Treats

Are you ready for some football???  {Sang to the tune of that commercial…you know…the football one!)  In getting ready for Super Bowl Sunday, I already shared my Painted NFL Serving Dishes and then shared two fabulous game day appetizers, Sausage & Cheese Wonton Cups and Prosciutto Wrapped Asparagus Spirals.  Both sure to please your hungry crowds and show everyone you can deviate from the chips and dip for game day!  Today I am here to appease to your sweet tooth…and maybe to the kids in your life…or even the kids at heart!

Game Day Krispie Treats

After I mixed up the treats, I let the mixture cool for about 1.5 hours.  Then, I used some vinyl kitchen gloves to help me form the football shapes!  The gloves kept my hands clean and the marshmallow didn’t stick nearly as bad!   I started by rolling a compact ball of the Krispy mixture into a ball a bit larger than a golf ball.  I then laid them on a piece of parchment paper and pressed the balls flat.  I pinched the edges to form the points of the football and then just shaped them to my liking! If the mixture is too warm it is incredibly hard to mold them.  You can also add some butter to your fingertips (in addition to the gloves) if you are having sticking issues.

I then used a small plastic sandwich bag and inserted my smallest round icing tip, filled with a few spoon fulls of regular store bought vanilla icing and I then carefully piped on the details and laces.  The whole time I was adding the icing I kept thinking of the movie Ace Ventura: Pet Detective where the mom kept saying “Laces Out!”  Since the treats are pretty uneven, don’t be upset if your details and laces are uneven also.  the icing lays where it lays and we aren’t dealing with the smoothest of surfaces!

Football Rice Krispy Treats

Ingredients Needed:

  • 4 cups of Cocoa flavored Rice Krispy Cereal
  • 4 cups of mini-marshmallows
  • 3 tablespoons of butter
  • vanilla frosting

Instructions

  • Begin by melting the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add marshmallows and heat until melted and smooth. Be sure not to burn the mixture.
  • Add krispy cereal and mix until incorporated.
  • Let cool for approximately 1.5 hours.
  • Roll a compact ball slightly larger than a golf ball of the mixture and then press flat on parchment paper.
  • Form into football shape.
  • Once cool, Use a small icing tip to add frosting to the treats for the details and laces of the football.
  • Enjoy!

Notes

Vinyl kitchen gloves and extra butter help to control the stickiness of the mixture. These proportions yielded 18 football treats. Footballs were approximately 3-4 inches lengthwise.
